Description/Overview:
In
our 4-wheeled drive vans; traverse the private backroads of the 22,000-acre
Grove Farm Sugar Plantation for a look back into the history of
Kauai. With enough room for 14 passengers, the
average tour takes only 10 people, allowing for maximum comfort for all. The son
of missionary teachers, George Norton Wilcox started Grove Farm in the 1860’s,
and built what would become a successful plantation. Due to the low price of
sugar worldwide Grove Farm is no longer in the sugar business; now, as
diversified agriculture replaces sugar, Grove Farm leases its land to over 100
tenants raising a variety of crops and animals.
Your tour includes stops along:
Kilohana Crater:
rising 1250 feet in elevation
- The
coastline of Mahaulepu. On the way up, the vegetation changes from sugar, to
rat berries and guava, to a mixed pine and bamboo forest. Wild orchids sprout
beside the road.
- The
east viewpoint: see the bowl of the crater about one half mile across, now
home to wild pigs.
- The
western rim of the crater: views of the eastern part of the
island.
- The
backside of Kilohana: en route to the rest area, hear information on the
formation of the islands, the migration of the Polynesians, Hawaiian history
and culture, the sugar industry, and diversified
agriculture.
- Papuaa
reservoir at the base of
Mt.
Kahili:
stop for refreshments and check out the bunkers built in the area during
WWII.
